Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 26, 2025
Devil's Advocate is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.
What We Collect
Text you analyze: When you use Devil's Advocate to analyze text (via right-click or the popup), that text is sent to Anthropic's Claude API for analysis. This is necessary to provide the argument analysis service.
Analytics data: We use Google Analytics to understand how people use the extension. This includes:
- Which features you use (quick analysis, full draft, version comparison)
- Error rates and types (to fix bugs)
- General usage patterns (not your actual text content)
Local storage: The extension stores some data locally in your browser:
- Your Anthropic API key (never sent anywhere except to Anthropic)
- Version history of your drafts (if you choose to save them)
- Onboarding preferences
What We DON'T Collect
We do not permanently store the text you analyze. Your text is sent to Claude for analysis and then discarded. We don't have a database of your arguments, drafts, or the articles you read.
We also don't collect:
- Your browsing history
- Personal information (name, email, etc.) unless you contact us
- The content of webpages you visit (only text you explicitly select)
How We Use Your Data
Text analysis: Sent to Anthropic's Claude API solely to generate argument analysis. Not stored by us.
Analytics: Used to improve the product, fix bugs, and understand which features are valuable. We don't sell this data.
Local data: Stored only on your device to improve your experience (like remembering your API key so you don't have to re-enter it).
Third Parties
Anthropic: Your analyzed text is sent to Anthropic's Claude API. Their privacy policy applies to how they handle this data. View Anthropic's Privacy Policy
Google Analytics: We use Google Analytics 4 to collect anonymous usage statistics. View Google's Privacy Policy
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access your data: Request a copy of any data we have about you
- Delete your data: Request deletion of any data we have
- Clear local data: Use your browser's extension settings to clear all locally stored data
- Opt out of analytics: Use a browser extension like uBlock Origin to block Google Analytics
Data Security
Your Anthropic API key is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's secure storage API. It's only sent directly to Anthropic's servers — never to us or any other third party.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We'll update the "Last updated" date at the top when we make changes.
